Muskies lose late, split with Raiders

The Lakeland College baseball team split their doubleheader with MSOE on Sunday, losing game one in the ninth, 7-6 and winning game two 8-5.

The Muskies (7-11, 2-6 NAC) sent junior right-hander Garrett Vincetich-Morris (1-1)(Janesville, Wis.) to the hill to start game one. He did his job and kept Lakeland in the game, pitching eight innings while allowing five runs on 12 hits with two walks and two strikeouts. Senior right-hander Andrew "Woody" Schartner (0-2)(Sturgeon Bay, Wis.) couldn't close the door in the ninth though, allowing two runs on four hits in a third on an inning.

The Muskies trailed 5-4 entering the seventh inning, but Schartner would single to right and come around to score on Mike Ruzek's (Manitowoc, Wis.) RBI single, tying the game. The Muskies would take the lead in the eighth when freshman center-fielder Charlie Sparrow (Milwaukee, Wis.) would come around to score on an error by the shortstop that allowed Schartner to reach base.

However, the 6-5 lead would be short lived as the Raiders of MSOE would score two runs on four consecutive hits to take the 7-5 win.

Ruzek and freshman shortstop Ryan Boettcher (Bonduel, Wis.) each went 2-4 and also recorded one RBI and one run scored. Sparrow had a big game in just his fourth start, going 2-4 with one RBI and two runs scored.

In game two, the Muskies sent freshman right-hander Andrew Mueller (2-0)(Horicon, Wis.) to the hill. Mueller pitched well, throwing seven innings while allowing five runs on eight hits with three walks and one strikeout. Freshman right-hander Matt Weller (1)(Wisconsin Rapids, Wis.) got his first save of the season, as he pitched two scoreless innings, allowing one hit, one walk and striking out three.

Lakeland trailed 3-1 entering the sixth inning, but the bats came to life as the Muskies scored five runs on three hits to take the 6-3 lead. A Schartner bases loaded, RBI single scored Anthony Lutz (Neenah, Wis.) to start the rally. Sophomore second baseman Andy Chitwood (Muscoda, Wis.) had the big hit, a three RBI double that scored Schartner, Sparrow, and Boettcher.

Senior catcher David Novak (Algoma, Wis.) gave the Muskies all the runs they would need, with an RBI single to score Chitwood and give the Muskies 6-3 lead.

Senior left-fielder Jeremy Meier (Sauk Prairie, Wis.) and Novak each had three hits. Meier went 3-3 with an RBI while Novak went 3-5 with two RBI's and one run scored. Chitwood finished the game going 1-4 with three RBI's and two runs scored.

The Muskies return to action on Wednesday, April 13, as they travel to Ripon, Wis. for a non-conference tilt against Ripon College. First pitch is scheduled for 1 p.m.
