Muskies swept by Red Hawks

The Lakeland College baseball team was swept in their double-header against Ripon College, losing 10-8 in game one and 5-4 in game two.
The Muskies (7-13) have now lost seven games by two runs or less in 2011.
Sophomore right-hander Andy Chitwood (1-3) (Muscoda, Wis.) got the ball in game one, throwing 6.2 innings, allowing nine runs on 13 hits with one walk and one strikeout. Freshman Matt Weller (Wisconsin Rapids, Wis.) pitched 1.1 innings in relief, allowing one run on two hits with one walk.
The Muskies got off to a strong start, scoring two runs on three hits in the first inning, on RBI singles by Mike Ruzek (Manitowoc, Wis.) and Erik Kozey (Medford, Wis.). Ripon would answer back, scoring two in the bottom of the first and adding two more in the third, taking a 4-3 lead.
Chitwood would settle in holding the Red Hawks scoreless through the next three innings, allowing Lakeland to come back. The Muskies would tie the game with one in the fourth and added two more in the seventh, on David Novak (Algoma, Wis.) and Ruzek RBI singles. Lakeland would hold the 6-4 lead until the bottom of the seventh.
Chitwood cracked in the seventh, allowing five runs on four hits, with Weller allowing one run on one hit in the inning, giving Ripon a 10-6 lead. Lakeland tried to rally but fell short as Novak had a two RBI single to cut the Red Hawk lead to 10-8, but that would be as close as it would get.
Andrew "Woody" Schartner (Sturgeon Bay, Wis.) paced the Muskie offense going 2-3 with two runs scored and drawing two walks. Designated hitter Anthony Lutz (Neenah, Wis.) had a nice day as well, going 1-3 with two runs scored and one RBI. Novak also had two hits, scoring once and recording three RBI's and Ruzek had a team high three hits and knocked in two runs.
Freshman right-hander Derek Loomans (0-0) (Waupun, Wis.) got his first career varsity start in game two and pitched well, throwing 4.2 innings, allowing four runs, three earned, on seven hits with six walks. Freshman Tim Green (0-1) (Hager City, Wis.) got his first varsity action in relief, throwing 3.1 innings, allowing one run on four hits with two walks and one strikeout.
The Muskies offense couldn't pick up the solid pitching, as four players combined for the team's seven hits. Lakeland tied the game at one in the fourth inning on a Kozey sacrifice fly. After Ripon scored three runs on two hits in the sixth, the Muskies had their own three run inning in the seventh, with Charlie Sparrow (Milwaukee, Wis.), Schartner, and Lutz, all recording an RBI.
An eighth inning pinch-hit RBI single by Ripon would sink the Muskies, as they couldn't rally in the ninth, falling 5-4.
Shortstop Ryan Boettcher (Bonduel, Wis.) led Lakeland at the plate, going 3-3 with one run scored. Schartner added two hits and an RBI, while Lutz and Novak had the only other hits for the Muskies.
Lakeland returns to action on Saturday, April 16, as they host NAC foe, Rockford College. First pitch is scheduled for noon.
