The Lakeland College baseball team swept Maranatha Baptist Bible College in a doubleheader on Saturday behind eight RBI's by senior catcher David Novak (Algoma, Wis.)
Novak was 4-8 on the day, with eight RBI's and three runs scored. The eight RBI's gives Novak 108 RBI's for his career, making him the career leader in that category.
The Muskies (12-18, 7-11 NAC) won game one 15-0 in seven innings and got the 7-3 win in game two.
Sophomore right-hander Andy Chitwood (W, 3-4) (Muscoda, Wis.) pitched game one, throwing seven innings of two hit baseball, striking out three and walking one.
The Muskies broke the game open in the fourth inning scoring five runs on three hits and an error. The big hit came from senior Andrew "Woody" Schartner (Sturgeon Bay, Wis.) who had a two RBI triple to cap the inning.
Lakeland would add six more in the sixth to salt away the win. This time it was Novak who delivered the big hit, a bases clearing triple, collecting three of his six RBI's in game one.
Novak and Schartner were the players of the game at the plate.
Novak went 2-4 with six RBI's and one run scored while Schartner went 3-5 with two RBI's and two runs scored.
In game two the Muskies continued to roll, getting a solid pitching performance from freshman right-hander Andrew Mueller (Horicon, Wis.). Mueller (W, 3-1) pitched a complete game, allowing three runs on eight hits, walking three and striking out three.
The Muskies scored early and often to build a nice cushion, scoring three runs in each of the first two innings. Novak and Chitwood did the damage in the first, with Novak tripling to drive in two runs and Chitwood singling him home.
In the second, Schartner collected yet another RBI and Mike Ruzek (Manitowoc,Wis.) got an RBI as well.
Chitwood was the offensive star in game two, going 2-3 with one RBI and one run scored.
The Muskies will return to action Sunday, May 1, as they host Marian University in a Northern Athletics Conference doubleheader. First pitch is set for noon.
