Muskies fall short at WVC Championships, four claim conference honors

The Lakeland College men's volleyball team continued its struggles in closing out matches as they went 1-4 at the WVC tournament on April 1-2.

On Friday, April 1, the Muskies (16-23, 8-10) won their first pool play match, defeating UW-Platteville 2-0 (25-23, 25-17), but then lost their fourth match of the season to host UW-Oshkosh 2-1 (25-15, 23-25, 15-3).

On Saturday, April 2, Lakeland lost their final pool play match to Marquette University 2-1 (23-25, 25-13, 15-13). The Muskies lost in the quarterfinals to UW-LaCrosse 2-0 (25-18, 25-18) and then were knocked out of the tournament in the consolation semi-finals by UW-Stout 2-0 (25-23, 25-22).

Sophomore outside hitter Dane Maier (Middleton, Wis.) led the Muskies with 47 kills and added 13 digs on defense. Meanwhile senior setter Chris Kubacki (Vernon Hills, Ill.) led Lakeland with 117 assists and nine blocks.

Junior Andrew Cheever (Milwaukee, Wis.), WVC libero of the Year, led the team with 29 digs.

Maier, who is the statistical leader in kills per game, and Cheever, who is the statistical leader in digs per game, were each named to the WVC All-Conference team. Freshman outside hitter Glenn Frost (Hanover Park, Ill.) was named to the WVC All-Freshman team.

For his hard work in the classroom, senior middle hitter Beau Bradshaw (Oak Lawn, Ill.) was named to the scholar athlete team.

The Muskies return to the court Thursday-Saturday, April 7-9, as they travel to Houston, Tex. to take part in the 2011 NCVF Collegiate Club Volleyball Championships at Reliant Park. The schedule will be released on April 6 and will be available here.
