Lakeland drops two to Falcons

Athletics - posted on 4/9/2011

The Lakeland College softball team suffered its first Northern Athletics Conference setback to Concordia, Wis., losing both games 4-1 and 12-2, respectively, Saturday afternoon at Muskie Field.

Early errors cost the Muskies (4-12, 4-2) in both games against the first-place Falcons.

In game one, CUW got an early 2-0 lead in the first inning and scored another two runs in the sixth to secure the first win of the doubleheader. Lakeland didn't have an answer until the fourth inning when freshman Brittni Peterson (Elmwood, Wis.) scored on junior Leah Sheahan's (Salem, Wis.) single.

The Muskies bats went quiet the remainder of game one, scoring only one run on six hits. Sophomore Heather Haeflinger (Shawano, Wis.) led Lakeland at the plate going 2-for-3.

On the pitching mound, sophomore Erin Henk (Hoopeston, Ill.) recorded three strikeouts, but gave up two runs on seven hits in six innings pitched.

The Falcons' bats went busy in game two as they scored 12 runs on 12 hits with one error.

Lakeland and CUW were tied in the first inning, but the Muskies couldn't make the defensive plays as they gave up four runs in the fourth and sixth inning.

"We had too many errors and defensive break downs," said head coach Chad Buchmann. "Offensively we had chances, but couldn't get hits at the right time and left girls on base."

Sheahan went 2-for-2 with one run scored while sophomore Megan Olson (Stoughton, Wis.) went 1-for-1 with an RBI.

Lakeland returns to action on Sunday, April 10, as they travel to Rockford College in Rockford, Ill. First pitch is slated for noon.
