Lakeland sweeps Dominican, keeps NAC bid alive

Athletics - posted on 4/18/2011

The Lakeland College softball team used a nine- run first inning rally in game one of its doubleheader against Dominican University to sweep the Stars in Northern Athletics Conference action Monday afternoon at Muskie Field.

The Muskies (7-17, 7-5) won game one, 11-10 and game two, 8-4 and keep their bid to the NAC Tournament alive.

In game one, Lakeland jumped on Dominican from the start of the game as they imposed their will en route to 9-3 lead in the first inning. The Stars rallied back and found the game tied at 10 in the seventh inning. Junior Leah Sheahan (Salem, Wis.) had the go-ahead run as Freshman Brittany Jurek (Gladstone, Mich.) had the sacrifice fly to secure the win.

To say head coach Chad Buchmann was pleased with the team's performance is an understatement.

"I was extremely impressed of the team's play in both games today," said Buchmann. "We did a great job defending our home field and overcoming weather distractions. The girls stayed focused and poised to make us a contender in the NAC Tournament."

Sophomore Heather Haeflinger (Shawano, Wis.) and Jenny LaLuzerne (Sturgeon Bay, Wis.) each had a solid performance at the plate, going 2-for-2 with two runs scored. LaLuzerne recorded three RBIs while Haeflinger turned in two of her own.

Sheahan also had an outstanding performance at the plate as the left fielder went 3-for-4 with three RBIs and two runs scored. Freshman Sammy Rieder (St. Cloud, Wis.) recorded two runs and an RBI. Sophomore Erin Henk (Hoopeston, Ill.) and Brittany Jurek both added a run, while Jurek posted two RBIs of her own.

Lakeland scored 11 runs on nine hits, while committing just three errors.

Game two proved to be just as successful for the Muskies. Freshman Chelsea Gile (Grand Junction, Mich.) hit a home run in the third inning. She ended the night 2-for-3 from the plate with three RBIs.

Haeflinger posted another solid afternoon at the plate as she went 2-for-4 with two runs and an RBI. Sheahan scored three runs and recorded an RBI as she went 1-for-2.

On the pitching mound, freshman Marissa Roovers (Appleton, Wis.) found her comfort zone as she posted another great performance, only giving up four runs.

Rieder, LaLuzerne, Gile and freshman Samm Janc (Worth, Ill.) all recorded doubles as Lakeland scored eight runs on nine hits.

"We are starting to peak at the right time," said Buchmann. "The girls are playing well and we are finding a consistency at the plate."

The Muskies return to action on Thursday, April 21, as they travel to Waukesha, Wis., to take on Carroll University.   First pitch is slated for 3 p.m.
