The Lakeland College men's tennis team is gearing up for the 2011 Northern Athletics Conference Tournament on May 7-8. The tournament is hosted by Concordia, Wis., and will be held at the Sports Core in Kohler.
The Muskies enter the tournament with a 2-7 NAC record and hope to make an impact in the individual tournament.
Senior Tom Kuehl (Hustisford, Wis.) leads a young Lakeland team with a bye in round one. Kuehl will face Dustin Holzhauer of the Milwaukee School of Engineering in round two. The winner will advance to face the winner of a match between John Dudley of Aurora University and Marco Colapietro of Dominican University.
Sophomore Dane Maier also received a first-round bye and will compete against Juan Montenegro of MSOE. Maier has the chance of facing Lakeland's own junior Kazuya Hosokawa in round three. Hosokawa will need to get past Thien Van of Concordia University Chicago in round one and Matt Saelens of Rockford College in round two to see Maier in round three.
Junior Andy Cheever (Greenfield, Wis.) will round out Lakeland's last singles competitor. Cheever will face Russell Johnson of CUW. The winner will advance to face Clay Trautman of Aurora University in round two.
In doubles action, the duo of Maier and junior Andy Cheever have a first-round bye, but have tough second-round draw against No. 1 seed Brian Tresedder and Russell Johnson of CUW. Also competing in doubles action is Kuehl and junior Yu Sasaki. The two square off against Marian University's Chris Wilwers and Andrew Bales in round one.
