Lakeland senior Matt Katzman has received the Northern Athletics Conference Student-Athlete of the Week award in baseball (pitchers) for the week of May 2-8, the league announced late Monday.
Katzman, a senior pitcher, helped lead the Muskies to their eighth straight conference victory, building momentum for next season.
In his only game of the week, Katzman had the best start of his career, throwing a complete game, six-hit shutout to beat Edgewood College. He had five strikeouts and held the Eagles to a .194 batting average.
"Katzman pitched like a senior should," said Lakeland head coach Chris Thousand. "He was very aggressive with all of his pitches. He had nothing to lose as a senior and he did a great job and finished his career strong."
For the season, Katzman finished 3-3 with a 4.47 ERA in eight starts, with two complete games and one shutout. In 54.1 innings, he allowed 30 runs (27 earned) and 64 hits, while striking out 31 and walking 16. He held opponents to a .299 batting average.
"It was nice to be able to go out on a high note," said Katzman. "Not everybody gets to win their last college game. It was a fun experience."
