The Lakeland College women's tennis team captured its third win of the season against Alverno College, beating the Inferno 6-3 Wednesday evening in Howards Grove.

This marks the Muskies first two-plus win season since 2003 when the team went 5-3 overall, 4-1 in the Lake Michigan Conference.

Senior Nicole Shavlik (Two Rivers) led the team at No. 1 singles with a victory over Tricia Goska, 6-1, 6-2. The Muskies also got victories from junior April Schmitz (Sheboygan) at No. 2 singles, sophomore Brittany Jurek (Gladstone, Mich.) at No. 4 singles and Jenna Oberthahler (Iron Mountain, Mich.) at No. 5 singles.

"We are competing in every single match we play," said head coach Casey Carr. "This was a great win for us and it was a huge confidence booster. The girls have confidence going into every match and that's what's important. It's going to help us advance in the Northern Athletics Conference Tournament as well as heading into next season."

Lakeland returns to action on Sept. 24 as they travel to Concordia University Wisconsin. The match is set for 10 a.m. in Mequon, Wis.
