Athletics - posted on 4/21/2012

ROCKFORD, Ill. - The Lakeland College softball team suffered its first Northern Athletics Conference sweep of the season in an 8-5 and 8-7 loss to Rockford College Saturday afternoon.

The 16-12 Muskies drop to 11-5 in the NAC and hope to return to their winning ways tomorrow when they face Concordia University Chicago.

Lakeland got off to a solid start in game one, but blew a 5-0 lead in the bottom of third as the Regents scored six runs to edge Lakeland. Rockford scored two more runs in the bottom of the sixth to keep their NAC Tournament hopes alive.

Sophomore Sammy Rieder led the Muskies at the plate with two RBIs and two runs as the New Holstein, Wis., native went 2-for-3. Sophomore Chelsea Gile went 3-for-4 with an RBI, while junior Jenny LaLuzerne and senior Leah Sheahan posted two hits each.

On the mound, junior pitcher Erin Henk fell to 11-5, but remains second the in NAC in wins. The Hoopeston, Ill., native gave up eight runs, three earned, on 15 hits, while recording one strikeout.

Lakeland couldn't find an answer for the Regents' seven-run first-inning display in game two. Although the Muskies scored first, Rockford scored seven runs on seven hits to sweep Lakeland for the second-straight year.

Junior Heather Haeflinger sparked the Muskies comeback in the third inning as she tripled to bring in freshman Kate Wallen. Haeflinger hit her ninth triple of the season, but it wasn't enough to carry the team. Lakeland brought it within two runs in the third, but ended just short.

The Muskies return to NAC action tomorrow as they take on the Cougars of Concordia University Chicago. First pitch is slated for Noon.
