Athletics - posted on 4/11/2012

Fond du Lac, Wis.- Junior Erin Henk posted another dominant performance on the mound to lead the Lakeland College softball team to a sweep over Marian University in Northern Athletics Conference play Wednesday night.

The 12-8 Muskies improved to 7-1 in the NAC with a 5-3 win in game one and a 2-0 win in game two. Henk earned both pitching wins to increase her season record to 8-3.

"Erin pitched outstanding," said head coach Chad Buchmann. "It was a pitching duel and we got the upper hand."

Henk finished the series with nine strikeouts while only giving up three runs on 11 hits. At the plate the Hoopeston, Ill., native went 4-for-6 with a double and one run scored.

Lakeland used a two-run inning in the third inning and held Marian in the bottom of the seventh to come out on top in game one. Sophomore Chelsea Gile powered the Muskies with a two-run home run in the third as she ended the game going 1-for-2 with two RBIs and a walk.

Junior Heather Haeflinger, who ranks fourth in the NCAA in triples, hit her seventh triple of the season, while freshman Kate Wallen posted a double.

Game two proved to be a defensive win for the Muskies as the team recorded its second shutout of the season. The team held the Sabres to just five hits, while only offensively only recording one strike out itself.

"It was an overall fantastic effort from the team today," said Buchmann. "We played extremely well defensively and hopefully we can post the same efforts against Concordia University Wisconsin on Saturday."

Sophomore Sammy Rieder went 2-for-4 and hit a triple to help led Lakeland in the season sweep. The two wins keep the Muskies atop the NAC, and move Buchmann eight wins away from Lakeland's all time wins record.

The Muskies return to NAC action on Saturday, April 14 as they travel to Mequon, Wis., to take on Concordia University Wisconsin. First pitch is slated for noon.
