MILWAUKEE, Wis. - The Lakeland College softball team positioned itself for a spot in the Northern Athletics Conference Tournament with a sweep over Wisconsin Lutheran College Thursday evening.
The Muskies (19-13, 14-6 NAC) used four triples and three doubles en route to a 4-0 win in game one and an 11-2 victory in game two.
Junior Heather Haeflinger hit her 10th triple of the season, and hit two doubles to lead the Muskies' attack. Haeflinger went 3-for-3 at the plate in game two with a triple and two doubles. She finished 4-for-7 with four RBIs and three runs to help Lakeland secure a spot in the NAC Tournament.
Junior Jenny LaLuzerne also helped lead Lakeland's attack with a triple and a double in game one. Lakeland's Woman of the Year scored two of the team's four runs.
The Muskies jumped on the Warriors early in both games, including taking a 9-0 advantage heading into the fourth inning of game two. Sophomore Sammy Rieder made two double plays in game one to keep Wisconsin Lutheran scoreless and give the Muskies their third shutout this season. Rieder tripled in game two and finished 3-for-6 at the plate with a RBI and run.
Head coach Chad Buchmann was pleased to see the team produce at the plate.
"We had timely hits and our four triples powered us through the games," said Buchmann. "We got on Wisconsin Lutheran early and didn't allow them to get into the game. Sammy (Rieder) made two huge double plays and Erin (Henk) dominated on the mound. Hopefully we can carry this momentum into the weekend against Aurora and Benedictine and get a couple more wins."
On the mound, junior Erin Henk picked up two wins to increase her season tally to 14-7. She gave up two runs on 15 hits and pitched all 13 innings.
Buchmann is now two wins away from breaking Lakeland's all time wins record (164) in program history.
The Muskies return to NAC action on Saturday as they host Aurora University. First pitch is slated for Noon.
