The Lakeland Muskies traveled to Edgewood on Wednesday, Sept. 28 and walked away with a 2-0 victory on a dark rainy night. The Muskies took the lead in the 28th minute when sophomore Tom Claas took a corner kick from freshman Kevin Fitchett and headed the ball into the back of the net from six yards out.
"To go on the road for a rival conference game with this kind of weather and the field conditions and walk away with two points and get the win feels great," said head coach Marc Colwell. "We played really well in the first half, every conference game is going to go 90 minutes and I'm glad our guys battled well and got us the win."
In the 78th minute sophomore Zach Buchman was able to take the ball from deep in the Lakeland territory and dribble all the way down the sideline before cutting in towards the middle and putting the ball past sophomore Edgewood goalkeeper, Ryan Flohr.
"I just stuck the guy on the right side of the field," said Buchman. "I had the whole field to run down. I took the ball and saw the goalie go to the left so I aimed towards the right and beat him."
The Muskies ended the night with eight shots on goal to Edgewood's six. Both keepers ended up with six saves and the Muskies senior goaltender, Joe Silverberg, came up with some late saves to keep his shutout bid intact.
"Joe did really well," said Colwell. "He stepped up for us in goal. I thought our back four played really strong as well for us. We recorded our first shutout of the season and I hope we can continue that. We still have to shore up a few things, but overall I thought the defense played well and I thought Joe played really well and got us the win."
The Muskies will finish off this two game road swing at Concordia on Saturday, Oct. 1 in a 3:30 p.m. match-up, before returning home to face Wisconsin Lutheran on Oct. 4th at 4 p.m.
