Muskies Advance To Second Round

The Lakeland men's soccer team advanced to the semifinal round of the Lake Michigan Conference tournament with a 4-0 win over Maranatha Baptist on Friday afternoon.

The Muskies jumped on top in the 24th minute when sophomore Zach Buchman took a pass from fellow sophomore Chris Christopherson and sent the ball into the back of the net. A minute later, junior Scott Kress put the Muskies up 2-0.

"We've been struggling in the first half to find goals this year," head coach Marc Colwell said after the game. "It was nice to get that first half goal and then get another one right after it to get a little cushion."

The Muskies put even more pressure on the Crusaders in the second half, launching 11 shots in the period. Sophomore Tyler Haug and freshman Kevin Fitchett connected on two of those shots to complete the scoring.

"Come the conference tournament the games get tense, and most of the matches will be tightly contested, one goal matches," Colwell said. "I was surprised we were able to get so much attack today."

Senior goalkeeper Joe Silverberg recorded three saves to extend his own school record for career shutouts to 15.

Lakeland will now face either Edgewood or Wisconsin Lutheran on Tuesday, November 1. The time and place will be determined upon the completion of the first round games.
