Muskies Improve to 4-0 on the Year With Big Win Over St. Norbert

Athletics - posted on 9/7/2005

The Lakeland Muskies improved to 4-0 on the season after traveling to De Pere to defeat the St. Norbert Green Knights 3-1 on Sept. 7. The Muskies took the first game by a score of 30-25, before losing game two 30-24. After the Green Knights evened the match at a game a piece the Muskies took game three 30-28 and won game four 30-27.

"I was really anxious for this match because we needed a barometer to gauge our level of play," said head coach Chad Schreiber. "Traditionally our matches with St. Norbert have always been close.  Tonight was no different.  Ball control was off at times making for great rallies.  We still need to serve and serve receive more effectively, but I'm pleased.  This was another step in the right direction."

With both teams winning their respective conference last season the match was expected to be tough, and the teams did not disappoint. Senior Danielle Duranceau played an important role in allowing the Muskies to escape with a victory. The utility player recorded 12 kills, a .265 hitting percentage, six aces, 10 digs and two blocks.

"This was Danielle Duranceau's coming out party as an outside hitter," said Schreiber.

After reaching 29 points in games three and four, the Muskies gave up five point runs to the Green Knights. Great plays and leadership by seniors Duranceau, Lana Neuman (45 assists, six kills, .385 hitting percentage, 11 digs, two blocks), Heather Heberlein (15 kills, three blocks), Sarah Buechel (16 digs), Renee Steinert (seven kills, six blocks) and Megan Maas was the key to the Muskies improving to 4-0 on the night.

"Megan Maas does not show up on the stat sheet but she made some critical plays and provided a spark all night," said Schreiber.

The Muskies will have until Sept. 13 to savor the victory as they prepare for a LMC match at Concordia. Both the junior varsity and varsity squads will play with the junior varsity match starting at 5p.m. and the varsity match following its conclusion.
