2011 Women's Tennis NAC Championship preview

Athletics - posted on 10/6/2011

The Lakeland College women's tennis team heads to Madison, Wis., this weekend to take part in the Northern Athletics Conference championships held at the Nielsen Tennis Stadium.

The Muskies look to put the icing on the cake after capturing the most regular season victories in eight years.

Lakeland went 3-8 during the regular season, and have been surging the latter part of the season. They hope that translates into a big weekend at the conference tournament.

In the singles bracket, senior Nicole Shavlik (Two Rivers, Wis.) leads the way after capturing the No. 3 seed and receiving a first-round bye. Junior April Schmitz (Sheboygan, Wis.) will face Marley Trier from MSOE, sophomore Jenna Oberthaler (Iron Mountain, Mich.) will face Kornelia Nowaczyk from Dominican and sophomore Brittany Jurek (Gladstone, Mich.) will face Kamile Udrenaite from Concordia University Chicago.

In the doubles bracket, Oberthaler and Jurek will be paired together against a team from Marian University, while Shavlik and Schmitz will be paired against a team from Aurora University.

Matches begin on Saturday at 9 a.m., with the first three rounds of singles matches taking place along with first and second rounds of doubles and doubles quarterfinals, if time allows. Play continues on Sunday, Oct. 9, at 9 a.m. with doubles quarterfinals, if not completed on Saturday, semi-finals of doubles, followed by singles quarter- and semi-finals. The tournament will conclude with singles and doubles championship matches.
