The Lakeland College women's tennis team competed in the Northern Athletics Conference Tournament on Oct. 9-10 at the Nielsen Tennis Stadium in Madison,
Wis.
Senior Nicole Shavlik (Two Rivers) and junior April Schmitz (Sheboygan) led the Muskies, advancing to the third round in singles competition. Shavlik defeated Lina Savikas of Benedictine University, 6-1, 6-1 in round two after receiving a first-round bye. She lost to Laura Olsen of Edgewood College, 6-2, 6-3.
Shavlik posted a 7-4 record this season, and wrapped up her Lakeland career with a 22-14 record.
Schmitz advanced to the third round after defeating Mary Trier of Edgewood College, 6-2, 6-3. She fell to Julie Spransy of Concordia University Wisconsin in round three, 6-1, 6-0. Schmitz finished her junior season at No. 2 singles with 5-6 record.
Also competing in the singles competition were sophomores Brittany Jurek (Gladstone, Mich.) and Jenna Oberthahler (Iron Mountain, Mich.). Jurek fell to Kamile Udrenaite of Concordia University Chicago, 6-4, 6-3 in round one. Jurek posted an impressive 5-6 record in her inaugural season.
Oberthahler fell in round one to NAC Freshman of the Year Kornelia Nowaczyk of Dominican University, 6-1, 6-0. She ended the season with a 1-8 mark.
In doubles competition, Shavlik and Schmitz defeated Natalie Jansen and Taylor LaVoy of Aurora University in round one, 8-4. They fell in round two to eventual doubles champions, Julie Spransy and Meagan Harrington of Concordia Wisconsin, 8-3.
