Every school has its Homecoming traditions, and Lakeland College is no exception. The women's basketball team continued their traditional alumni game on Saturday, Oct. 15, with many former Muskies returning to their old stomping grounds.

The 2011 alumni women's basketball game was white against gold. Team white consisted of Allison Komaromy, Lynn (Holguin) Sixel, KC Blahnik, Sara (Langenhorst) Kluck, Stacey (Urbas) Pieper, Jenna Boehm and Renee (Steiner) Bowerman. The gold team consisted of Mary Dennewitz, Kasey Gussert, Kristi (Thill) Bachar, Danelle (VanderPlas) Phillips, Beth Porter and Dawn (Wendegatz) Machtig.

The white team got the victory, 51-46. Bowerman led all scorers with 16 points, while Blahnik added 14. Team gold was led by Dennewitz who scored 13, while Porter and Machtig added 10 points each.

New head coach Lindsey VandeHoef wanted the players to feel right at home. As part of the alumni game, VandeHoef decorated the locker room with former player's jerseys, name plates and pictures from the past. "As a new coach, I wanted to make them feel welcomed back to the program, let them know that I appreciate their contributions and am thrilled that they are still involved," said VandeHoef.

While she admitted to being surprised by the response she received, VandeHoef is determined to keep these former players involved in the program.

"It's a great opportunity for our players to learn from past generations and to understand the history of this program," said VandeHoef. "These games are good for the players because it shows the great support that exists for this team. I hope to extend this alumni theme throughout the season with some special alumni nights to recognize the success of many of our former athletes. Overall, it was a great success and I look forward to continuing to connect with the alumni and having them help teach our present players what it means to be a Muskie."
