Muskies Win Ninth Straight Conference Match

Athletics - posted on 10/11/2005

The Lakeland Volleyball team won its ninth straight conference match after it defeated first place Maranatha Baptist Bible College 3-0 on Tuesday, Oct. 11 in Watertown. The first two games were close and the Muskies took both of them 30-28, before running away with the third match 30-16.

"This match was important because we needed to prove we can continue to come back from our slow start to conference play," said head coach Chad Schreiber. "We still have very important matches ahead of us, but can only win the regular season title with help from other teams. Our sights are now set on a tough non-conference tournament schedule coming up. Tonight was positive in so many ways. I am excited with the level of play we are developing."

The game was a total team effort, with six Muskie players playing key roles. Freshman Jessica Sparling registered all but six assists in her 40 assist effort. Sparling also led the team in blocks with seven, was second in hitting percentage at .400, along with recording seven blocks and four digs. Offensively, senior Heather Heberlein tallied 12 kills, while sophomore Ashley Domask came up with 11. Senior Sarah Buechel tallied five aces as well. Defensively, senior Lana Neuman tallied 14 digs to lead the team, while Domask registered ten and Buechel nabbed seven. Senior Nikki Boeckh led the team with six blocks.

The women's volleyball squad will prepare to play in a tough Elmhurst tournament starting on Friday, Oct 14 and continuing on Saturday. The next home match will be on Oct. 18 against LMC opponent Wisconsin Lutheran.
