The Lakeland Muskies remained undefeated in the new Moose and Dona Woltzen Gymnasium as they defeated the Wisconsin Lutheran Warriors 3-0 on Tuesday Oct. 18. The Muskies won 30-22, 30-25 and 30-19.
"Every game I say serving is the key," said head coach Chad Schreiber. "When we serve well it sets up everything that we do. Serving got us out ahead tonight (in game three). We transitioned really well. I thought Lana (Neuman) played one of her best matches of the year. She was very efficient all night long."
In the first game the Muskies got out to a quick 4-0 start, however, they allowed the Warriors to rally and games one and two remained fairly close. In the third set the Muskies appeared to dominate jumping out to a 22-9 lead. However, once again the Warriors found a way to start to climb back in it before Lakeland was able to put them away 30-19.
Lakeland was led in part by seniors Heather Heberlein, Danielle Duranceau and Lana Neuman. Heberlein registered 12 kills, while Duranceau netted 11 during the match. Neuman registered all but four of the assists as she totaled 39 on the evening.
"Lana's great setting allowed Heather (Heberlein) to hit with velocity all night. When you allow Heather to hit with velocity she gets into a rhythm and she was in a rhythm all night long pounding the ball hard.
"Danielle (Duranceau) she was one of the players not taking efficient swings early on," said Schreiber. "She quickly corrected that and anytime we were in trouble we threw a ball to her and she either got a kill or took them out of their system."
The Muskies will be back in action this weekend on Friday, Oct. 21 and Saturday, Oct. 22 at the UW-LaCrosse tournament. They return home where they will try and improve to 6-0 on their home court in the regular season finale against Dominican on Tuesday, Oct. 25. That Tuesday will also mark senior day for the Muskie volleyball team.
