Muskies Move on to the Semifinals

The Lakeland Muskies advanced to the semifinals of the LMC tournament with a 3-0 (30-13, 30-19, 30-22) victory over Dominican on Thursday, Oct. 3. With the victory the Muskies earned the right to host the semifinals and finals on Friday and Saturday Nov. 4 and 5.

"I thought we were steady," said head coach Chad Schreiber. "We weren't over explosive, but we weren't under aggressive either. We did what we needed to do to get the win."

In the first game the Muskies came out quickly as they ran away with a 30-13 victory. Seniors Heather Heberlein and Lana Neuman led the Muskies. Heberlein tallied five kills, while Neuman racked up seven assists and nine digs.

In the second match Neuman again led the Muskies in assists with eight, while fellow seniors Danielle Duranceau and Nikki Boeckh had four kills each. Sophomores Ashley Domask and Rachel Young both tallied six digs in the game. Midway through the second game Schreiber started to put in some of his subs in order to help keep his starters fresh for the rest of the weekend.

"We came really prepared for tonight's match," said Nikki Boeckh. "We wanted to play with a really high speed pace. They did really good at picking up a lot of our swings and digging a lot of our balls so I give them credit for playing well against us."

In the third match freshman Heidi Kramer tallied four kills, while Boeckh netted three. Freshman Jessica Sparling came in and played a great game, picking up 12 of her 14 assists in just the third game. Senior Sarah Buechel tallied five digs, and played a fairly good match considering she has been banged up all season.

"Sarah looked fresh and I was very happy to see that based on how injured she's been this season," said Schreiber. "She looked like she was playing on a healthy body tonight."

In the match as a whole both Heberlein and Boeckh led the team with eight kills. Neuman ended the evening with 15 assists and 14 digs, while Domask and Young each registered 14 digs on the night.

"Part of our game plan was to get our middles a lot of balls," said Schreiber. "The fact that Nikki played well was it was part of our game plan to get her balls.

The first semifinal match will pit #2 Maranatha, who defeated Edgewood 3-0 earlier this evening, against #3 Concordia, who defeated #6 MSOE, 3-1, at 5:00p.m.

The Muskies will be the second of two matches in the LMC semifinals on Friday, Nov. 4. They will face #5 Marian, who upset #4 Wisconsin Lutheran 3-1 this evening, at 7:30p.m on Nov. 4.
