Volleyball falls to UW-Eau Claire in NCAA First Round Action

The Lakeland volleyball team fell to the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire Blugolds 3-0 (30-21, 30-19, 30-23) in the first round of the NCAA Division III Regional hosted by UW-Oshkosh.
"I think emotionally we were ready to play," said Lakeland head coach Chad Schreiber. "At times we were distracted and lost our roles a little bit, and that cost us points. We can't lose points in a match like this. We lost a little focus and we got distracted, and that was the difference in all three games."
In the first game, the Muskies, who finish the season 23-16, scored the first points of the game and both teams exchanged the lead several times. With the game tied at 8-8, the Blugolds went on a six-point run, forcing Schreiber to call a timeout.
The Muskies were able to go on a five-point run coming out of the timeout to close within one at 14-13, and a Renee Steinert kill tied the match at 16-16. But the Blugolds took command to net the 30-21 win.
In the second game, Eau Claire took control from the beginning on the way to a 30-19 victory.
In the third game, after falling behind 21-13, the Muskies fought back with a seven-point run to get within one at 21-20. But the Blugolds answered, and moved on to the second round.
Senior Heather Heberlein, who earlier this week was named Lake Michigan Conference Player of the Year and a member of the All-Region team, led Lakeland in her final match with 15 kills, while sophomore Ashley Domask led the team in digs with 16.
This was the fourth straight appearance in the NCAA Tournament for the Muskies, who have yet to advance to the second round.
"I think we met expectations," said Schreiber.
