The Lakeland College men's volleyball team opened its 2012 campaign with a 3-2 (23-25, 25-20, 25-19, 22-25, 11-15) loss to visiting Marquette University in a Wisconsin Volleyball Conference contest Wednesday night.
The Muskies (0-1, 0-1 WVC) played hard and aggressive, but couldn't overcome their mistakes.
Lakeland was led by the freshman combination of outside hitter Alec Redlich (Wauwatosa, Wis.) and setter Dayton Erickson (Trevor, Wis.). Redlich had a team-high 14 kills, five digs, one block and one ace while Erickson had 49 assists, 15 digs and six blocks.
Seniors Beau Bradshaw (Oak Lawn, Ill.) and Dan Sheets-Poling (Plainfield, Ill.) along with freshman Braden Woods (Downers Grove, Ill.) each had 12 kills while Bradshaw added one ace and five blocks.
Senior Andrew Cheever (Milwaukee, Wis.) led the defense with 19 digs, while another freshman Cole Aiazzi (Yerington, Nev.) added 10 digs.
Lakeland returns to action on Saturday, Jan. 28, as the Muskies travel to Oshkosh, Wis. to take part in the WVC Crossovers. Lakeland will face UW-Platteville and UW-La Crosse with the times to be determined.
