The Lakeland College men's volleyball team went 2-2 in pool play on day one of the Hoosier-Illini Classic in Champaign, Ill.

The Muskies (6-10) suffered from a lack of consistency which they hope they can find as they enter tournament play.
Lakeland opened pool play with a win over Michigan State, defeating the Spartans 2-0 (25-19, 25-17). Freshman outside hitter Alec Redlich (Wauwatosa, Wis.) had a team-high nine kills while sophomore middle hitter Ralph Kokoszka (Palos Heights, Ill.) added six kills.

In their second match, the Muskies lost to Penn State in three games, 2-1 (18-25, 25-19, 9-15). In the loss Kokoszka led the team with eight kills and freshman setter Dayton Erickson (Trevor, Wis.) finished with 27 assists.

The Muskies got their second win of the day with a two set victory over Florida University, 2-0 (25-22, 25-14). Redlich led Lakeland with a team-high 10 kills and senior Andrew Cheever (Greenfield, Wis.) led the defense with six digs.

In the challenge round, which determines which bracket teams compete in on day two, Lakeland lost to Ohio Northern, 2-0 (22-25, 19-25). Offensively, Redlich led the Muskies with 10 kills, while Erickson added 23 assists and two aces. Cheever led the defense with eight digs.

"We can be one of the best teams in the gym or one of the worst," said Lakeland head coach Joe Julkowski. "The work "or" is what hinders us from being great. We need to consistently play the way we played against Michigan State and Florida or we will continue to walk away from matches disappointed in our performance."

Lakeland continues play in the Hoosier-Illini Classic silver bracket tomorrow, Feb. 19. The opponent and time are to be determined.
