This week in baseball

Athletics - posted on 4/17/2012

This week, the Lakeland College baseball team hits the road for a pair of games before hosting Dominican University.

The Muskies (16-11, 6-6 NAC) begin the week on the road with a trip to De Pere, Wis., for a non-conference game against St. Norbert College tomorrow at 4 p.m. Lakeland returns to Northern Athletics Conference play on Saturday with a trip to Rockford College before welcoming Dominican University on Sunday.

The Muskies went 4-2 last week, including a 3-1 mark in conference play. Lakeland started the week with a non-conference split with Ripon College, their first victory over the Red Hawks in 10 tries. In NAC play, the Muskies swept Wisconsin Lutheran College, including a walk-off victory in game one. Lakeland couldn't repeat the feat on the road, splitting with rival Concordia University Wisconsin, despite two outstanding pitching performances from Mike Ruzek and Andy Chitwood.

Nate Soley was the catalyst offensively for Lakeland as he hit .448 (13-for-29) with 10 runs scored, three RBIs, seven walks, three hit-by-pitches and three doubles. He led the team with a .590 on-base percentage and was a main reason for the team's offensive success.

Ruzek continued to be stellar on the mound, going 2-0 with a 1.59 ERA in two starts. He pitched 17 innings, allowing just three earned runs on 16 hits, striking out five and holding opponents to a .246 average.
