The Lakeland College women's soccer team took an early lead but Ripon College controlled play after and defeated the Muskies 6-2 Sunday afternoon.
Brandy Peltier scored four goals and was often in the right place at the right time as the Red Hawks took advantage of a number of successful corner kick plays to improve to 2-0 on the season. Lakeland lost for the second straight day at home to a Midwest Conference team and fell to 0-2 this year.
The Muskies got an early jump in the game when Hannah Landgraf (Sr.-Elkhart Lake, Wis.) received a pass from Brooke Schallar (So.-Howards Grove, Wis.) and scored 12:41 into the match to give Lakeland a 1-0 lead.
Ripon came back to tie it exactly three minutes later as Peltier scored off a pass from Nicole Glasheen. The Red Hawks then took the lead in the 31st minute when Taylor Ziebol deflected in a corner kick from Emily Schultz.
The visitors added another goal just over two minutes later on another corner kick when Peltier headed in a corner from Alex Jirik, giving Ripon a 3-1 lead. The Red Hawks took that lead into halftime, then scored just 56 seconds into the second half as Peltier punched in another corner from Schultz to make it 4-1.
Lakeland responded with its second goal of the match soon after when Landgraf dribbled through the defense and scored unassisted to make it 4-2. The Red Hawks responded 11 minutes later, though, as Schultz's corner kick deflected off goalkeeper Brittni Peterson (So.-Elmwood, Wis.) and into the net, and Peltier added one more goal in the 64th minute, getting free behind the defense and beating Peterson one-on-one for the final margin.
Ripon controlled play, outshooting the Muskies 27-10. Peterson made 11 saves in goal for Lakeland. Landgraf led the Muskies offensive with five shots, including four of the team's six shots on goal.
Lakeland will play its third straight home game to open the season and its Northern Athletics Conference opener on Wednesday when it hosts Alverno College at 4 p.m. at the Lakeland Soccer Field.
