Marian University headed in a pair of goals in the first half and the Lakeland College women's soccer team lost 3-0 in a Northern Athletics Conference match Wednesday afternoon.
Despite its season-long shortcomings in depth, the Muskies again battled hard against one of the NAC's better teams but dropped to 3-8 overall and 2-4 in conference. Marian is now 5-5 overall and 5-2 in the NAC and extended its winning streak over Lakeland to four straight matches.
Lakeland played on even terms with the Sabres for the first 20 minutes of the match, outworking the visitors for a time before Marian started to take over. The Sabres eventually got on the board at 29:49 of the match when Jenny Brandt headed in a corner kick by Laura Maly past goalkeeper Ali Thompson (Fr.-Plymouth, Wis.).
Marian took advantage of a free kick for its second goal as Jade Koeune scored on a header, redirecting a free kick by Maly in the 38th minute. The Sabres held the 2-0 lead into halftime, outshooting Lakeland 14-2 in the first half.
Marian added a third goal in the 59th minute as a break went its way. Kylie McArthur took a shot inside the box against Thompson, who deflected the ball right back at McArthur. The ball then bounced off McArthur and went past Thompson into the goal to make it 3-0.
Despite trailing the Muskies continued to push in the second half and had several good chances to score. Hannah Landgraf (Sr.-Elkart Lake, Wis.) turned and fired a shot just high over the goal in the 52nd minute and later was unable to settle the ball down on a one-on-one chance against Sabres goalkeeper Jordan Dykstra. Lakeland outshot Marian 9-5 in the second half and forced Dykstra to make five saves in the second half after she replaced starting keeper Caitlyn Rosenberger.
Landgraf finished with six shots in the game to lead the Muskies offensively, while Brooke Schallar (So.-Howards Grove, Wis.) added two shots. Thompson made 10 saves in goal for Lakeland.
The Muskies return to play Saturday, traveling to River Forest, Ill., to face Dominican (Ill.) University at 3:30 p.m. in an NAC match.
