MILWAUKEE - Wisconsin Lutheran College played up to the Northern Athletics Conference preseason favorite status it received before the season, defeating the Lakeland College women's tennis team 8-1 in a Northern Athletics Conference match Wednesday night.
The Muskies were competitive against the team voted first in the NAC's preseason poll of league coaches but dropped to 1-2 overall and in the conference. The Warriors improved to 2-0 in the NAC and 3-1 overall.
Erica Hoffmann (Jr.-Sheboygan Falls, Wis.) was the lone winner for Lakeland, defeating Emily Pearson of Wisconsin Lutheran at No. 4 singles 6-3, 6-4. Hoffmann also teamed with Brittany Jurek (Jr.-Gladstone, Mich.) for the Muskies' most competitive doubles match, falling 8-3 to Kathryn Hendee and Kendall Bonnin.
Jurek was on pace to give Lakeland a second win at No. 5 singles, as she won the first set against Bonnin 6-3, but an injury forced her to retire, giving the match to Bonnin and WLC.
Other results for Lakeland included April Schmitz (Sr.-Sheboygan, Wis.) falling to Kaitlyn Strehlow at No. 1 singles 6-1, 6-0. Lynn Pipke (Fr.-Greenfield, Wis.) lost to Hendee 6-0, 6-1 at No. 2 singles, Jenna Oberthaler (Jr.-Iron Mountain, Mich.) was defeated by Alyssa Strangstalien at No. 3 singles 6-1, 6-0, and Petra Krause defeated Alissa Stephani (So.-Appleton, Wis.) at No. 6 singles 6-0, 6-0.
