RIVER FOREST, ILL. - Lakeland College defeated Greenville (Ill.) College for the second time in two days on Saturday to clinch third place in the Star Classic hosted by Dominican (Ill.) University.
The Muskies defeated the Panthers 25-14, 25-20, 25-19 in the consolation match of the four-team invitational, finishing the weekend with a 2-2 record in the tournament. Lakeland is now 6-2 overall on the season heading into its Northern Athletics Conference opener Tuesday against Concordia University Wisconsin.
Katie Freitag (Jr.-Kiel, Wis.) recorded 10 kills with just three errors in 21 attempts to lead Lakeland against Greenville. She also posted four blocks (including two solo) and finished the tourney by being named to the all-tournament team.
The Muskies posted 41 kills with just 16 errors in 105 attempts for a .238 attack percentage against Greenville and also added seven blocks. Anna Faust (Jr.-Cross Plains, Wis.) added nine kills and four assisted blocks, while Brittany Reindl (Jr.-Kenosha, Wis.) dished out 35 assists and led the team with 11 digs.
Lakeland opened the day with a three-set loss to the host school Dominican, losing 25-12, 25-20, 25-19. The Stars are the defending NAC regular season champions and were picked in the preseason poll of league coaches to win the conference again.
Dominican finished with 47 kills and just 10 hitting errors for a .339 hitting percentage. Jacy Lawrence had 14 kills and Claire Dezelski added nine for the Stars, who would later defeat Willamette (Ore.) University in the tournament championship match.
Faust and Caleigh Galvan (Fr.-New Lenox, Ill.) both had eight kills against Dominican, and Faust, Galvan and Taylor Daus (Sr.-Bay Port, Wis.) all finished with nine digs.
