Muskie volleyball splits two matches at Wheaton Triangular

WHEATON, ILL. - Caleigh Galvan (Fr.-New Lenox, Ill.) pounded home 18 kills and the Lakeland College women's volleyball team won a four-set battle against Monmouth (Ill.) College to open the Wheaton College Triangular Saturday afternoon.

The Muskies defeated the Fighting Scots 25-20, 19-25, 25-20, 25-23 on Saturday before losing to host Wheaton in three sets, 25-16, 25-18 and 25-20. Lakeland is now 8-3 on the season and is one win from tying its win total from all of 2011, when the team finished 9-21 overall.

Galvan led the Muskies against Monmouth with 18 kills and just four errors in 33 attempts for a .424 hitting percentage. As a team Lakeland hit .210 against Monmouth (6-4 overall) with 52 kills and 23 errors in 138 attempts.

Galvan wasn't the only freshman who was effective on the attack. LeShay Jones (Fr.-Pontiac, Mich.) made her first collegiate start and also added 11 kills to just three errors in 19 attempts, good for a .421 attack percentage. Taylor Daus (Sr.-Bay Port, Wis.) also added 11 kills and Anna Faust (Jr.-Cross Plains, Wis.) added nine, as the four combined for 49 of the team's 52 kills.

Brittany Reindl (Jr.-Kenosha, Wis.) finished with 43 assists against Monmouth and also led the team with 10 digs. Chelsey Widdop paced the Fighting Scots with 15 kills and 16 digs.

Lakeland had considerably less success in the second match against the homestanding Thunder. The Muskies hit .000 for the match with 18 kills and 18 errors in 87 attempts, while Wheaton (3-9 overall) finished with just 11 errors to 30 kills in 94 attempts.

Faust led the Muskies with a modest six kills and also added 13 digs. Galvan led Lakeland with 16 digs, with Reindl posting 17 assists.

Lakeland returns to Northern Athletics Conference play Wednesday when it faces Alverno College at 7 p.m. in Milwaukee.
