Lakeland opens season with own Muskie Invite

The Lakeland College wrestling team opened its 2012-13 season with its own Muskie Invitational on Saturday at the Wehr Center fieldhouse.

The Muskies were led by a trio of third place finishes, all at 149 pounds and below. Alec Noa (Fr.-Westmont, Ill.) won the third place match at 125 lbs. by a 9-4 decision of Kevin Urban of Carroll University, Marcus McCauley (Fr.-Hillpoint, Wis.) won a 7-2 decision over Justin Schienebeck of University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh at 141 lbs., and Jacob Maechtle (So.-Port Washington, Wis.) pinned Mason McMullen of UW-Oshkosh at 149 lbs.

Lakeland also got fourth place showings at 133 lbs. by Eduardo Orihuela (So.-Menominee, Mich.) and at 174 lbs. by Wesley Colton (Fr.-Machesney Park, Ill.). Orihuela was 1-2 at 133 lbs., falling by decision in the third place match to Nick Miceli of Milwaukee School of Engineering. Colton also was 1-2 at 174 lbs., losing to Bill Langford of University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point at 5:37.
 

Matt Weber (So.-Lockport, Ill.) lost his first match at 157 lbs. but came back to win two straight before being eliminated by pin by Weston Klink of University of Wisconsin-Whitewater. Vincent Cardarelle (So.-Saukville, Wis.) went 0-2 at 165 lbs., Eddie Terres (Fr.-Escanaba, Mich.) went 1-2 at 184 lbs., and Jeremy Kroeger (So.-Villa Park, Ill.) won his first match in the Heavyweight division before losing twice.
 

McCauley also emerged best of five Lakeland wrestlers competing at 141 lbs. Juan Diaz (So.-Park Ridge, Ill.) finished with a 3-2 record, losing to McCauley in the match to reach the third place match. Joel Frias (Sr.-Oak Lawn, Ill.) eliminated Payton Shillcox (Fr.-Two Rivers, Wis.) before retiring due to injury, and Rashaun Sparks (Fr.-Campbellsport, Wis.) was eliminated by Diaz, finishing with a 1-2 record.
 

UW-Stevens Point led the way with five individual champions on the day. UW-Whitewater featured four champions, and UW-Oshkosh won its lone title at 184 lbs.

The Muskies return to the mat Thursday night for a dual meet against UW-Stevens Point at 7 p.m. The match will take place at Pulaski High School in Pulaski.
