WATERTOWN, Wis. - Eddie Terres (Fr.-Escanaba, Mich.) won the Northern Wrestling Association title at 184 lbs., but the Lakeland College wrestling team saw its string of consecutive conference championships snapped Saturday at the NWA Tournament hosted by Maranatha Baptist Bible College.
Concordia University Wisconsin won the team title with 97.5 points, while Lakeland finished second with 86.5 points. The Muskies were unable to win at least a share of the conference title for the first time in six years, a streak that included sole possession of four titles plus sharing the championship last year with Milwaukee School of Engineering.
Terres highlighted the day for Lakeland with a pair of close wins. He defeated Jesse Gjefle of Maranatha Baptist via a 4-2 decision and then won the title with a double-overtime win over John Hinson of Concordia.
The Muskies also finished with five runner-up finishes, led by Marcus McCauley (Fr.-Hillpoint, Wis.). McCauley fell in the finals at 141 lbs. to Matthew Ostovich of MSOE, losing 9-7 in double overtime, but he was honored after the tourney as the NWA's Freshman of the Year.
Andrew Wagner (So.-West Bend, Wis.) also finished second at 285 lbs., defeating Ryan Cook of Concordia in the quarterfinals and Seth Kilkelly of Concordia in the semifinals, both by pin. He lost to Steven Bora of Knox (Ill.) College by a 7-2 decision in the final.
Jeremy Kroeger (So.-Villa Park, Ill.) also lost a close match at 197 lbs., losing 8-6 in overtime to Jake Reuteler of Concordia in the championship. Matt Weber (So.-Lockport, Ill.) also fell by an 11-3 major decision to Dallas Schurg of MSOE in the final at 157 lbs., and Jake Maechtle (So.-Port Washington, Wis.) also was pinned by Greg Sanders of Concordia in the championship match at 149 lbs.
Concordia finished with five individual champions on the day, while MSOE posted three winners and Knox added one. MSOE finished third in the team standings with 68 points, with Knox fourth (27.5) and Maranatha Baptist fifth (13).
The Muskies now get ready for the NCAA Division III Great Lakes Regional, to be held March 2 at Elmhurst College in Elmhurst, Ill.
