Lakeland Defeats Edgewood in LMC Conference Action
Athletics - posted on 10/23/2004
The Lakeland College Men's Soccer team survived a howling first half wind to defeat Lake Michigan Conference rival Edgewood College 3-0 today. Scott Kress scored a first half goal against the run of play to give Lakeland a lead they would not relinquish.
In the opening moments of the game, it looked like Edgewood College would tally a couple goals with the wind at their backs. The Lakeland College defense found a way to keep Edgewood off the board until Kress broke free and slotted home a goal in the 25th minute. The Eagles held a decided advantage of 8 shots to 2 in the first half though none would be on frame.
The score would remain 1-0 going into the halftime intermission. With the change of sides and the wind at their backs the run of play shifted to Lakeland. Junior back Ryan Holl (Plymouth, Indiana) rocketed a 35 yard direct kick into the upper V for a 2-0 Muskies lead in the 51st minute.
Mike Gorack, a sophomore midfielder from Algonquin, Illinois, finished off the scoring in the 64th minute when he scored his fourth goal of the season.
Junior goalkeeper Joe Silverberg (South Bend, Indiana) earned the shutout in goal with only 1 save on the day.
With the win, Lakeland improves to 7-10-1 overall and 3-3 in the LMC.
The Muskies will return to action on Saturday, October 30th when they travel to Milwaukee to play in the LMC Tournament First Round against MSOE at Uihlein Soccer Complex. Game time is slated for 7 pm.
