Lakeland picks up non-conference tennis win over Mount Mary

KOHLER - Lynn Pipke (Fr.-Greenfield, Wis.) posted a straight sets win without losing a game to lead the Lakeland College women's tennis team to a 7-2 win over Mount Mary College Thursday evening in a non-conference match at the Sports Core.

Pipke defeated Briana Lock 6-0, 6-0, and also teamed with April Schmitz (Sr.-Sheboygan, Wis.) at No. 1 doubles to defeat Krista Olson and Katie Wolk 8-2. The Muskies won their second match of the season, improving to 2-2 overall while the Blue Angels dropped to 0-5.

The Muskies won four of six matches at singles and swept all three matches at doubles. Joining Pipke as a winner at singles was Schmitz, a 6-1, 6-2 winner over Krista Olson at No. 1 singles.

Erica Hoffmann (Jr.-Sheboygan Falls, Wis.) defeated Kate Reuter at No. 4 singles with a 7-5, 6-0 win, improving to 3-1 at singles on the season. Brittany Jurek (Jr.-Gladstone, Mich.) also is now 3-1 at singles after a 6-0, 6-1 win at No. 5 singles over Brooke Slamka.

Hoffmann and Jurek also teamed up at No. 2 doubles to defeat Slamka and Carol Guillen by an 8-1 score. Also winning at No. 3 doubles were Jenna Oberthaler (Jr.-Iron Mountain, Mich.) and Samantha Tonn (Fr.-Wisconsin Dells, Wis.), who defeated Lock and Kat Reynoso 8-5.

Mount Mary got both of its wins at singles, led by Guillen defeating Oberthaler at No. 3 singles 6-4, 6-1. Reynoso also picked up a win for the Blue Angels, defeating Alissa Stephani (So.-Appleton, Wis.) 7-5, 6-2 at No. 6 singles.

Lakeland is home again Saturday for two more Northern Athletics Conference matches when it hosts Aurora (Ill.) University and Benedictine (Ill.) University. Match times at the Sports Core will be 10 a.m. for the match against Aurora and 2 p.m. against Benedictine.
