MEQUON - Ryan Newburry (So.-Campbellsport, Wis.) and Matt Lewellyn (Fr.-Oshkosh, Wis.) recorded top 10 finishes to lead the Lakeland College men's golf team to a sixth-place finish at the Concordia University Wisconsin Elite-8 Invitational held Tuesday at the North Shore Country Club.
Newburry shot a round of 79 to tie four others for sixth place individually on the par-72 course. It was his second career top 10 and helped the Muskies finish with a team score of 339 to place sixth of nine teams. Wheaton (Ill.) College won the team championship with a score of 306, 16 strokes ahead of its nearest competitor.
Lewellyn also scored his first career top 10 by tying two others for 10th individually with a round of 80. Lakeland suffered a drop off after the two leaders, though, as Beau Gundersen (So.-New Berlin, Wis.) was next with a round of 89. Tyler Kubicek (Jr.-Madison, Wis.) was two shots behind Gundersen with a round of 91, and Andy Schneider (So.-Franklin, Wis.) finished with a score of 100.
Tommy Cardle of Wheaton won medalist honors with a round of one-over 73. The Thunder finished with three of the top five individuals and placed four in the top 10.
Lakeland will compete in the two-day Wisconsin Lutheran College Invitational next week at the Washington County Golf Course in Hartford. Play will begin Sunday at 10:15 a.m. and will continue through Monday.
