Lakeland Men's Soccer Thwarted in LMC Tournament by Concordia Goalkeeper
Athletics - posted on 11/3/2004
The Lakeland College Men's Soccer teams run in the LMC Tournament was stopped by a hot Concordia goalkeeper in their 2-1 defeat this afternoon. Lakeland dominated much of the play, but was unable to tip the scales in their favor.
Falcon's goalkeeper Steve Purcell gobbled up 16 saves on the day including several acrobatic stops. Lakeland took 24 shots with 17 on goal compared to only 18 and 7 respectively for the Falcons.
It looked as though Lakeland would go up 1-0 early in the contest when senior midfielder Shuaib Basheer was cut down in the box after a great individual effort. Lakeland's chance was dashed as the Concordia goalkeeper punched away a well taken penalty.
Just minutes later, Concordia scored on a Peter Schreiber finish to go up 1-0. Scott Kress (Kiel) got around the Concordia keeper in the 25th minute but was unable to finish from the angle created. The score would remain unchanged until halftime even though Lakeland continued to pepper the Falcons goal.
Schreiber found a wide open Brian Nord in the 48th minute to put Concordia up 2-0. The Muskies would finally tally a goal in the 85th minute on a tremendous blast from sophomore midfielder Mike Gorack (Algonquin, Illinois) off a Sam Schroeder assist.
The Muskies could not equalize in the games final moments and their hopes of an LMC title went to the wayside.
Junior goalkeeper Joe Silverberg (South Bend, Indiana) went the distance in goal and picked up 5 saves.
