Muskie Baseball Players Earn Academic Recognition
Aug. 20, 2003

The Lakeland College Baseball Team recently had several players selected to the 2002-2003 Lake Michigan Scholar-Athlete Team, proving once again that the team succeeds both in the classroom and on the field.

Leading the way was senior Alan-Paul Gibson who capped off a brilliant academic career with a near 4.0 grade point average. Following Gibson was junior Dan Rauwerdink, a product of Sheboygan North High School. Three freshman set a standard with outstanding academic performances in Andrew Cornelius, Doug Mogenson and Nick Steudel. These five young men led the way for a program that has consistently maintained a team GPA near 3.0 for the past four years.

"I'm really proud of the five guys selected to the team," said head coach John Weber. "They are a true example to their teammates and clearly understand what we mean when we talk about student-athletes. We always stress that academics are first within our program and overall, out team has been sensational academically.

Lakeland hasn't been too shabby on the field either as they just completed a 27-16 campaign that saw them win their third straight Lake Michigan Conference Championship and earn their second straigh NCAA bid.
