Muskie Men's Basketball Loses Heartbreaker to Lake Forest
Nov. 25, 2003

The Lakeland College Men's Basketball Team had a stroke of bad luck hit them at the end of their game at Lake Forest on November 25. After four missed free throws by the Muskies, Forester forward Eric McDonald connected with two seconds left in the game to down Lakeland, 68-67.

The Muskies led 67-64 with 20 seconds remaining when senior guard Cory Nickel missed two free throws with a chance to seal the game. The Foresters responded by making a lay-up with 10 seconds left, making the score 67-66.

The Foresters immediately fouled Andy Stouvenel after the inbound pass. Stouvenel also missed his two free throws, which led to the game-winning shot by McDonald.

The Muskies trailed for much of the game. They held the lead only three times and were down by as many as nine points in the second half.

Senior forward Morten Smiedowicz led all scorers with 21 points. Nickel contributed 16 points and six assists.

Lakeland shot a whopping 32 free throws in the second half, sinking 25 of them; however, they just couldn't get the ones that made the difference to fall.

The men will play their home opener Saturday, November 29 at 3 p.m. against Trinity International.
