Men's Soccer Remains Unbeaten in LMC; Kress Ties Single
Season Scoring Record
October 14, 2003
Watertown, WI- On a rainy and windy afternoon the Lakeland College Men's Soccer
team picked up a stylish 4-0 win over the Crusaders of Maranatha Baptist. The
win improved Lakeland's overall record to 7-7-1 and vaults them back into first
place in the LMC with a 3-0-1 mark.
The Muskies began the game playing against a blistering wind and did a nice job of possessing the ball and controlling the tempo. The Crusaders defense was up to the task in the first half as the teams would go into halftime scoreless.
After halftime, the weather improved as Lakeland picked up their play and put away the host Crusaders. Freshman midfielder Dave Meister (Plymouth, Indiana) opened up the scoring in the 53rd minute with a knuckling blast from 25 yards off an assist from fellow freshmen Mike Gorack (Algonquin, Illinois) and Trey Summers (Franklin).
Just one minute later, Gorack was chopped down in the box to earn a Lakeland penalty kick. Freshman forward Scott Kress (Kiel) knocked home the goal, tying the Muskies single season goals scored mark at twelve.
In the 62nd minute, Kress would return the favor to Gorack. Kress cut thru a Crusader defender and set up Gorack for a wicked blast that found the upper corner of the goal to make it 3-0. Freshman forward Sam Schroeder completed the scoring at 4-0 with a cute header goal off an assist from freshman forward Tyler Opichka (Green Bay).
Joe Silverberg (South Bend, Indiana) picked up his fourth shutout of the season in goal with 2 saves. The Muskies have not given up a goal in conference play - a span of 380 minutes.
The Muskie Men will be back in action Saturday when they travel to Mequon to face Concordia University at 3:00 p.m. in a battle for supremacy in the LMC. Concordia remains undefeated in the conference at 3-0 while the Muskies have a half game edge with a 3-0-1 record.
