Mequon, WI - In a highly anticipated match against Concordia University, with
a battle for first place in conference on the line, the Muskie men never really
got going in a frustrating 5-1 defeat Saturday afternoon in Mequon. The disappointing
loss moved Lakeland to 7-8-1 overall and 3-1-1 in the Lake Michigan Conference.
Concordia moved to 8-5-1 overall and to 4-0 in the LMC - all alone in first
place.
The only highlight of the day for the Muskies was the record-setting goal that Scott Kress (Kiel) scored, making him Lakeland's all-time leader for goals in a single-season with 13.
The Falcons got off to a quick start in the 3rd minute when the Muskies got beat on the back side, allowing Rodney Drew to put home a cross from just over midfield.
Concordia would strike again in the 21st minute when Steve Dziatkiewicz sent one home after a melee in front of the net to put the Falcons up 2-0. This is how the half would end, as the Muskies looked to improve their efforts in the second half.
In the 56th minute Scott Kress earned a goal through hard work and an assist from Ryan Holl (Plymouth, IN) to cut the Concordia lead in half. Kress beat the Falcon keeper to the ball, heading it past him into the Concordia net.
The Muskies felt a new energy after the goal, but were denied, as Steve Dziatkiewicz would put the Falcons up 3-1 just 10 minutes later when a deflected shot off of the crossbar found his foot.
Concordia would continue their run as they put the game away for good in the 72nd minute when Peter Schreiber sent home a nice hit, to make the score 4-1. With only 20 seconds to play the Falcons struck for the final time ending the game at 5-1.
The Lakeland men will be back in action at home for another highly anticipated match against rival Edgewood College on October 25th at 3:00 pm. This is their final regular season contest, as they get ready to make a run in the LMC tournament.
