October 25, 2003
Sheboygan, Wisconsin- The Lakeland College men's soccer team and the Eagles
of Edgewood battled for 110 minutes en route to a 4-4 result on senior day.
The Muskies finished the regular season with a 7-8-2 overall record and 3-1-2
in the Lake Michigan Conference. The Muskies will now face the 6th seeded team
in the conference in the first round of the LMC tournament.
Lakeland would lead four times during the game with leads of 1-0, 2-1, 3-2, and 4-3, but the Eagles fought back for an equalizing goal each time.
The Muskies dominated the score sheet in every category as they out-shot their opponent 24-13 and held a 9-3 advantage in corner kicks.
Freshman forward Scott Kress (Kiel) opened the scoring in the 2nd minute off an assist from senior midfielder Carmelo Teran (Leon, Spain) to put the Muskies up 1-0. Edgewood's Rob Sergenian would answer with a goal in the 19th minute.
Kress would add his second goal of the day in the 25th minute off another great assist from Teran. However, the Eagles would draw level on another Sergenian goal after a Muskie defensive give away.
Teran put the Muskies back up 3-2 when caught the Eagle goalie off his line and placed a swerving goal from 30 yards out. The score would remain 3-2 going into half-time.
The Eagles would tie the score again at 3-3 in the 47th minute on an Aaron Olson rebound goal. The Muskies regained a 4-3 advantage when Scott Kress completed the hat trick for the day when he headed home a 45 yard set piece from sophomore defender Ryan Holl (Plymouth, Indiana).
Not to be outdone, the Eagles Rob Sergenian would tally his own hat trick in the 65th minute on an assist from Mike Shinstine to bring the score to 4-4.
In the overtime periods, the Muskies played with renewed vigor and were able to create some great scoring chances, but neither team could capitalize and the game ended in a 4-4 tie.
The Muskie men have earned the right to host the first round of the Lake Michigan Conference on Friday, October 31st at Muskie Field. The game time will be posted on the Lakeland College web-site when it is announced.
