Men's Soccer Triumphs 4-0
October 4, 2003

Sheboygan WI-The Lakeland College Men's Soccer team took their time in scoring today, but finished off the Warriors of Wisconsin Lutheran with four second half goals. With the 4-0 win, Lakeland improves to 4-6-1 overall and 1-0-1 in Lake Michigan Conference play.

Lakeland dominated much of the action in the first half keeping possession of the ball for long periods and out-shooting Lutheran 12-1. However, the Warriors defense was able to hold firm and both teams went into the half time interval tied at 0-0.

The Muskies again controlled the play at the start of the 2nd half and were awarded a penalty kick in the 63rd minute as freshman forward Tyler Opichka (Green Bay) was taken down in the box. Fellow freshman Scott Kress (Kiel) buried the ensuing kick to make the score 1-0.

Kress would add another goal just three minutes later as he swiped the goal kick taken by the Warrior goalkeeper and banged home a near post goal. In the 67th minute Kress would draw another penalty kick for the Muskies, but this time Opichka stepped up and put it away for a 3-0 Muskie lead.

In the 81st minute senior Mike Smolinski (Menasha, WI) set up freshman forward Sam Schroeder (Big Lake, Minnesota) for the final tally and a 4-0 win.

Sophomore goalkeeper Joe Silverberg (South Bend, Indiana) earned his 2nd shutout in as many games totaling 2 saves on the day.

The Muskies will return to action tomorrow as they host Wisconsin Whitewater. The game will be played at Muskie Field on the Lakeland College campus and will begin at 1:00pm.
