Kress Leads Men's Soccer To First Round Victory In
LMC Tournament
Nov. 1, 2003
Sheboygan, WI - The Lakeland College Men's Soccer team defeated the Crusaders
of Maranatha Baptist 4-0 today in the first round of the Lake Michigan Conference
tournament. With the win, the Muskies advance to the LMC tournament semi-finals
with pairings to be announced.
Senior midfielder Carmel Teran (Leon, Spain) took matters into his own hands early on as he unleashed a number of offensive attacks at the Crusaders. He would be rewarded for his hard work in the 13th minute as he took a Scott Kress (Kiel) back heel and hit a well placed bender for a 1-0 Muskie lead. That would be all the scoring in the first half as the Crusaders took control of the run of play late in the half.
The Muskies came out after half-time with a renewed vigor and put the pressure back on the Crusaders. Scott Kress scored his 17th goal of the season on assists from fellow freshmen Tyler Opichka (Green Bay) and Mike Gorack (Algonquin, Illinois) in the 48th minute to give the Muskies a two goal cushion.
In the 70th minute, Opichka found the back of the net on a brilliant header off a cross from Kress to make it 3-0. Kress was not done as he drew a penalty kick on the Crusaders in the 72nd minute and senior midfielder Adam Sherwood (Green Bay) calmly put it away for the 4-0 victory.
Lakeland out-shot the visitors 26-13 on the day and held a 6-2 advantage in corners.
Sophomore goalkeeper Joe Silverberg (South Bend, Indiana) made 5 saves in preserving the shut out.
The Muskies return to action Tuesday, November 4th at a site and against an opponent yet to be determined.
