Muskie Men Lose Heartbreaker In Overtime
November 4, 2003
Madison, WI- The Lakeland men's soccer team battled the Edgewood Eagles to a
scoreless regulation before conceding the game winning goal in the 98th minute
in the first overtime period. The Muskies could not find a rhythm of play in
their attack as they were without their best playmaker and found themselves
playing on a mud bowl instead of a soccer pitch.
The resilient Muskies controlled the run of play early in the game as they adjusted their style of play to fit the poor field conditions. However, the Eagles were able to gain momentum in the 2nd half and took control of the contest. Only the outstanding play of sophomore goalkeeper Joe Silverberg (7 saves) kept the Muskies level at 0-0 going into overtime.
In the first overtime, Silverberg made an incredible save on a point blank shot that was destined for the goal to keep the Muskies alive. Unfortunately, the Muskies could not mount much of an attack to counter the Eagles pressure. In the 98th minute, the Eagles earned a corner kick that would set up the game winner. Drew Rhodes from Edgewood served a perfect ball to a well marked Rob Sergenian who rose above his defender and nodded home the winning goal.
With the loss Lakeland ends their season with an 8-9-2 record (3-1-2 in the LMC). Edgewood moves on the LMC finals where they will face the winner of the Concordia versus MSOE match-up.
