Lakeland Men's Soccer Victorious in Season Opener
August 29, 2003

Sheboygan, WI- The Lakeland College men's soccer team opened up a new season with a 3-1 win over Carroll College. A young and talented Muskie squad overcame a sluggish first half as a pair of freshmen led the way.

The Muskies opened the scoring in the 3rd minute on an own goal created by a breakaway by freshman and Kiel native Scott Kress. The Pioneers of Carroll College answered with a goal in the 24th minute. The score would remain unchanged going into halftime.

In the second half, the Muskies picked up their play and created some great scoring chances. Mike Gorack, a freshman from Algonquin, Illinois, slotted home a great cross from Senior Mike Smolinski (Menasha) in the 68th minute. Kress scored his first collegiate goal a minute later on an assist from freshman Tyler Opichka (Green Bay).

Sophomore goalkeeper Joe Silverberg shut down the Carroll offense in second half and finished with 6 saves.

The Lakeland College men will be back in action this weekend on the Lakeland College Campus. On Sunday the Muskies host 22nd ranked University of Wisconsin Oshkosh at 2:00 p.m.
