Muskie Men Battle Marian to 0-0 Draw
September 30, 2003

Fond du Lac, WI-Smith field was the site of an intense Lake Michigan Conference match-up between the Sabres of Marian and the Muskies of Lakeland College. 110 minutes of soccer couldn't decide it as the score board didn't change in a 0-0 tie. The Muskies improve to 3-6-1 overall and 0-0-1 in the LMC, while Marian moved to 0-9-1 and 0-1-1 in the LMC.

The match was a battle from the opening whistle with the Muskies taking control early. However, the Sabres were able to get behind the ball in numbers to frustrate the Muskies attack time and time again. The best chance for the Muskies in the first half came when Mike Smolinski (Menasha) chimed the inside post off a corner kick leaving a sitter rebound in front of the goal. Unfortunately, the Muskie rebound attempt found the parking lot instead of the back of the net.

In the second half, the Muskies showed renewed vigor as they attacked repeatedly. Lakeland would fire off 16 shots in the period, but could not penetrate the stingy Sabres defense.

The run of play in the overtime periods was decidedly in the Muskies favor, unfortunately they could not put the game away and after 110 minutes of play the game ended in a draw. Statistically, the Muskie controlled the entire game, out-shooting the Sabres 29 to 17, and winning 10 corner kicks to Marian's 2 in the match.

Muskies sophomore goalkeeper Joe Silverberg (South Bend, IN) made 6 saves on the night while earning his first shutout of the season.

The Muskies take to the pitch again this weekend as they host Wisconsin Lutheran in what is sure to be another Lake Michigan Conference battle. Game time is slated for 3:30 p.m.
