Lakeland Men's Soccer Unlucky in Loss to North Park
September 6, 2003

Sheboygan, WI- The Lakeland College Muskies and the Vikings of North Park University battled for 90 minutes with North Park getting the lone goal in the 1-0 game. Lakeland fell to 1-2 on the young season while the regionally ranked North Park improved to 2-0-1.

The first half was very intense with both teams playing solid defense with fast paced counter attacks. North Park would get on the board early with a goal by Matt Moncada in the 7th minute. Lakeland created a few good chances in the first half, but couldn't penetrate a stingy Vikings defense.

The second half was all Muskies as they out shot the visitors 10-5 and controlled the run of play. The Muskies dominant second half effort included a 25 yard blast from freshman Tyler Opichka that ricocheted off the crossbar. Scott Kress had the Vikings keeper beat on a bent ball from 20 yards that bounced off the upper corner and crossbar. Lakeland would chime the post again when Carmelo Teran weaved thru and had a sure goal smack inside the near post. The Muskies had several rebound opportunities, but were unable to convert. Teran found Kress on a great thru ball over the Vikings back line and flicked it over the outstretched hands of goalkeeper Matt Evans, but watched as it sailed over the bar.

Lakeland goalkeeper Joe Silverberg made 3 saves including a breakaway on a defensive miscue, but was otherwise unchallenged.

Lakeland returns to action this Sunday, September 7, when they face Aurora University at Muskie Field. Kick-off time is carded for 1pm.
