Mike has also served as an assistant coach for the women's volleyball program at Lakeland for the past two seasons, helping the squad reach the first round of the NCAA DIII playoffs and earn their fifth-straight LMC first place finish in 2005. Smolinski has also helped Lakeland head coach Chad Schreiber with a number of volleyball camps in recent years.

Mike graduated in May of 2005 with Bachelor's degrees in sports management and business administration. He is working toward his master's in counseling. Mike is originally from Menasha and currently resides in Howards Grove.
