Cornell, storm stop Muskies in season finale

Deidre Franzen scored three goals in the first half and Cornell (Iowa) College spoiled the season finale for the Lakeland College women's soccer team, defeating the Muskies 6-2 in a non-conference match Thursday.

Lakeland scored first but was done in by four unanswered goals by the Rams in the first half. The Muskies finished the year with a 3-15 record, while Midwest Conference member Cornell improved to 4-12-1.

Lakeland got the early jump when Taylor Jahnke (So.-Howards Grove, Wis.) charged the goal from her defensive spot and headed in a crossing pass from Erin Regner (So.-Milwaukee, Wis.) just 4:47 into the match for her second goal of the season. The lead would last for less than three minutes, though, as a foul in the box resulted in a penalty kick which Franzen converted to tie the match.

The Muskie defense began to break down and the visiting Rams took advantage. Franzen received a pass from Sarah Calhoun in the 20th minute and scored to put Cornell ahead, and she completed her hat trick just over two minutes later with an assist from Zauditu Kaza-Amlak. The Rams would add a fourth goal with 4:38 left in the first half with Franzen assisting Kendra Wisely and making it 4-1 heading into halftime.

The match was played on a muddy field dampened from heavy rains last week and showing wear after the Lakeland men's double overtime match yesterday against Marian University. The conditions would get even worse in the as a cold front moving in at the start of the second half brought a torrential downpour and heavy wind gusts for the first 15 minutes of the final half.

The rain lightened up and play began to open up again, with Cornell taking advantage as Calhoun scored off a pass from Chelsea Harris to make it 5-1 in the 66th minute. The Muskies got a goal back at the 71:21 mark when Hannah Landgraf (Sr.-Elkhart Lake, Wis.), playing her final match for Lakeland, hit a perfectly placed free kick from the left side into the upper right corner of the net to make it 5-2.

The Muskies would get no closer, though, as Cornell answered just 36 seconds later with Wisely passing it through the defense ahead to Karime Nava, who won the one-on-one battle with goalkeeper Ali Thompson (Fr.-Plymouth, Wis.) and made it 6-2.

Cornell outshot Lakeland 28-10 for the match, including a 16-4 margin in shots on goal. Landgraf had five of the Muskies' 10 shot attempts and just missed an earlier goal in the second half, popping the ball up and just over the crossbar. Thompson made 10 saves playing in goal for Lakeland, while three goalkeepers combined to make two saves for the Rams.
