Muskies labor on offense in loss to Benedictine

LISLE, Ill. - The Lakeland College women's basketball team made just seven field goals in both halves, shooting just 29.2% for the game in a 49-38 loss to Benedictine (Ill.) University Saturday afternoon in a Northern Athletics Conference game.

The Muskies made 14 of 48 field goal attempts in the game and scored just nine points in the game's final 11:23, dropping to 1-5 overall and 1-2 in the NAC. Benedictine got its first win of the season to improve to 1-5 overall and 1-1 in conference play.

Lakeland never was able to generate a consistent offense through the game. The Muskies fell behind by nine points early, starting out cold as the Eagles took a 14-5 lead on a three-point play by Katie Hunzinger with 12:29 left in the first half.

Lakeland responded to take an 18-16 lead into halftime, finishing with a jumper by Aimee Thrune (Jr.-Prairie du Sac, Ill.) with 33 seconds left in the half. Benedictine started the second half on an 11-3 run, though, taking the lead for good on a basket inside by Alexis Joseph to make it 22-21 with 18:30 left in the game.

The Muskies still were within six when Liz Morrison (Fr.-Wisconsin Rapids, Wis.) scored on a layup to make it 41-35 with 5:04 left. Lakeland would score just three points the rest of the way, though, and was held scoreless the final 2:52.

Thrune led the Muskies with nine points and Taylor Jandrin (Jr.-Forestville, Wis.) added eight points. Both added two three-pointers each, while Leah Eisner (Jr.-Stevens Point, Wis.) added seven points and seven rebounds.

Hunzinger led the Eagles with 19 points. Benedictine shot 34.5% (19-of-55) and also out-rebounded Lakeland 40-33.

The Muskies return home to face Alverno College Tuesday night at 7 p.m. at the Woltzen Gymnasium.
